Here I am, on my knees, Bible open, searching for peace this morning. When life circumstances are far beyond my control, I find myself here before God. Of course he should be the first place I look for peace, not the last resort.

Too bad it takes serious, frightening times like these before we take God’s word seriously.

Storms of life always seem to be unexpected, but Jesus said we should expect them. He said that in this world we will have trouble. He also encouraged us to take heart, because he has overcome the world.

I’ve lived through some heart breaks and some trying times. Each was devastating, at the time. The current storm (COVID-19) is scarier than most. More frightening to face. It is far beyond my control. Farther than I’ve experienced in the past.

I return to the promises.
My God has promised to be with me during this storm and every storm. He will see me through.
Zephaniah 3:17 assures me that the Lord is with me. He will keep me anchored until this storm passes.
From Isaiah 43:2: He promises to be with me. The storm appears threatening, but it won’t sweep me away.
In Isaiah 41:10 God says do not fear, do not be dismayed. He will strengthen me. He will hold me up.
Psalm 107 tells of when God stilled the storm with a whisper, the waves of the sea were hushed.

From Psalm 143
The psalmist begs God to hear his prayer and his pleas for mercy. He says “In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness.”

This is what I have to remember. I can trust him.
My faith is based on God’s faithfulness, not mine. I am not faithful. I am a sinner saved by grace.
The power is based on his righteousness, not mine. The only righteousness I have is from Jesus Christ.
In verse 5, the psalmist remembers and meditates on all God has done. I have to do this, too. I will remember how he has pulled me through trouble in the past and I’ll remember that he never left me for a minute.

I don’t have to rely on myself. I am not strong. God is.

God keeps his promises.

God is faithful.

This storm will pass.
